Summer Exhibition 2023
Stars – The Firmament in Manuscripts of the Abbey of St Gall
Summer Exhibition in the Baroque Hall of the Abbey Library of St Gall
14 March until 29 October 2023
The stars: they are far away and yet very near. Since the beginning of time, they have fascinated people. Shining in the sky, they have provided orientation and given inspiration and hope. They were the basis for the calculation of time and for attempts to predict the future. And as comets, they occasionally spread fear and terror.
The exhibition traces the path of these luminous points in the firmament from antiquity to modern times. In it, we encounter potent archaic ideas such as Jacob’s Ladder and the Star of Bethlehem, but also the great supernova of 1006, an early medieval terrestrial and celestial globe as well as memorable events such as the controversy over the correct calendar in the 1580s.
