Summer Exhibition 2022
At a Turning Point of History – Notker the German (d. 1022)
Summer Exhibition in the Baroque Hall of the Abbey Library
8 March until 6 November 2022
One
thousand years ago, on 28 June 1022, the St Gall monk Notker the
German died of a disease introduced by the army of Henry II. As an
eminent scholar, teacher and translator, he had raised St Gall
scholarship and the monastic school to extraordinary heights. The
exhibition presents the achievements of this visionary figure and gives
an impression of the wide-ranging intellectual life at the turn of the
first millennium, which was also a time of social renewal.
