Familia sancti Galli – Living in serfdom
Annual exhibition in the exhibition space of the St Gall Abbey Archives
28 January 2022 to 25 January 2023
In the Early Middle Ages, many people living in the region of Lake Constance decided to donate their property to the Abbey of St Gall. The abbey soon became one of the most powerful ecclesiastical manors in Europe. From the very beginning, Gallus, as patron saint of the abbey and of Alemannia, was believed to provide heavenly and earthly protection. However, the Abbey of St Gall owned not only vast estates, but also the maids and farm hands working on them. As serfs, they were transferred to the abbey along with the land, thus becoming members of the rapidly growing familia sancti Galli.
