Few places offer such detailed information about their origins as the Abbey of St Gall. It was here that in the year 612, the Irish monk Gall built the first hermitage with a chapel. Soon, a community of monks began to form. The surrounding area was cleared and alongside, a secular settlement developed. After Gall’s death around 640, his grave became a place of pilgrimage. The monastery of St Gall came into being and soon emerged as one of the most important abbeys of the Middle Ages.
The exhibition tells the story of the monastery’s early history in the 7th century. It connects the written records preserved in the Abbey Library with the excavations of the past few decades and presents the new findings that have emerged.
